Bangladesh will negotiate with India to secure its fair share of water but will make no concessions on water sharing, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir said. He presented the keynote paper at a seminar in the capital on Thursday (8 October) titled 'Rethinking the Future of Water: Youth Leadership, Justice and Cooperation'.
He said a committee will be formed in Bangladesh to renew the water treaty and that the government hopes to start talks with India quickly. Bangladesh has international law and the full support of its people behind its claim to water rights, he added.
Humayun Kabir said the necessary steps will be taken to secure water rights, and that Bangladesh will never return to the 'dark era' of the past 15 years.
